The 2016 Chiefs jersey has been designed by adidas. This shirt comes in white with a silver tribal pattern. The famous adidas stripes roll of the shoulders in yellow and red. The Chiefs and adidas logos sit proudly on the chest.
The design of the Chiefs jersey is based around the Whatanoa gateway standing in the corner of Waikato Stadium. The team draws great strength from this feature and many supporters pass through it to urge the Chiefs on. The taniwha featured on the whatanoa represent the contributing unions of Waikato, Thames Valley, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, King Country and Counties Manukau. Taniwha feature throughout the design giving life to the Waikato/Tainui axiom “Waikato of many chiefs. At ever bend of the river there is a chief” (He piko he taniwha). Like its predecessor this jersey features the Waikato river flowing in yellow through the design bringing together the franchise and all its supporters. The dark background symbolises ones journey upward and trying to attain physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. It’s depicts growth and progress and aspiring to be the best one can be. The jersey celebrates success and the many great rangatira (chiefs) that have played a huge role in the history of the region, which over time has seen many battles. It is these great battles and moments of heroism that are encapsulated in the jersey.
